Format

The thesis is written to CDRom in portable document format. This is an international standard format (using the DOS extension .pdf). Each subsection of the thesis (text, sections, references, tables, figures) exists as a separate file which can be viewed and printed in a similar fashion to any conventional word processing document. Additionally, the thesis behaves like a web page in that all figures, subsections, tables etc. can be displayed simply be clicking on their links in the text. At the end of each subsection, links are provided to the following section so the thesis can be read like a book if required.

The .pdf files are readable using the Adobe Acrobat freeware software provided which is compatible with all computer platforms (Win3.1, Win95, NT, 98, 2000, XP, Me, Mac, Unix) and has user support on the Adobe website http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/main.html.
